JCAHO Clinical Engineering Standards Study Group

  • MISSION:

Develop a set of standards for medical equipment to replace those currently (2004) issued by JCAHO (mostly 6.10 and 6.20 but also other relevant standards), with detailed Elements of Performance (EPs) and scoring criteria, reflecting up-to-date medical equipment management experience accumulated by healthcare organizations, ISOs, professional associations, academia, etc.

  • GOAL

Create a set of medical equipment standards acceptable to the clinical community that reflects up-to-date management knowledge and experience accumulated by the CE community (healthcare organizations, ISOs, professional associations, academia, etc.)

  • OBJECTIVES

    • Standards that effectively help improve patient safety, enhance efficacy, increase availability and reliability

    • Standards that can be implemented “honestly,” i.e., without manipulations and adjustments
    • Standards that are simple and easy to understand, without the need of consultants or training courses
    • Standards that are flexible to adapt to individual characteristics of each organization
    • Standards that clearly defines the role of CE Dept’s in equipment planning, acquisition, replacement, disposal, user training, incident investigation and analysis, etc.
